Stuart McCullough is a 35 year old Vocational Agricultural Instructor in Los Banos California. He has been married to his wife Kimberly for the last nine years. They have two children, Lauren 4 ½ and Zachary 1 ½. They reside in Los Banos which is in the heart of the Grasslands of Central California where Stuart spends most of his free time in the pursuit of waterfowl.
He started hunting waterfowl when he was 14 years old cutting his teeth on a river shooting woodies and mallards. At 16 he had a truck, boat, and decoys and this set the scene for the years to come. With each new season came new ideas and new territory to explore. Being on the public ground gave him the opportunity to be mobile and stay on fresh birds. Also, taking good notes from season to season helped with his success on the refuges.
After spending several years on the public ground learning the many
refuges in the area it was time to add to the season. In 1997 Stuart purchased his first RNT Call from Butch Richenback. The smoke acrylic original was the start of an interest that would stand second to only hunting waterfowl itself. His first contest was in January of 1998 where he won the novice and placed second in the California State. From there he continued to practice and travel to competitions until he qualified for the World Championship in 2000 by winning the California State Duck Calling Contest. In addition to traveling around the country to compete in regionals, opens, and team events he has qualified for the World Championship three more times, most recently by winning the California State in August of 2004.
One of the other things that Stuart enjoys is the chance to work with kids on their calling. At times, there can be several youngsters in his shop at school working on routines preparing for their next contest. There are many occasions that calls are tuned between classes and students are coming in at lunch for a little help or just a fresh cork. Most recently he is excited to see his daughter Lauren having fun in the youth contest.
